Dermaplaning is a gentle physical exfoliation treatment that removes dead surface skin cells and fine vellus hair, commonly known as peach fuzz, to reveal smoother, brighter-looking skin.

At Dr. Kaga’s NJ practice, dermaplaning can be performed as a stand-alone treatment or incorporated into a customized skincare plan to improve texture, create a smoother surface for makeup, and give dull skin an immediate refresh.

Why choose dermaplaning?

Dead skin cells can accumulate on the skin’s surface, contributing to a rough, dry, or dull appearance. Fine facial hair can also make texture more noticeable and affect how smoothly makeup and skincare products apply.

Dermaplaning uses a sterile, surgical-grade blade to gently exfoliate the outermost layer of dead skin cells while removing fine vellus hair.

Treatment may be a good option if you’re looking to improve:

  • Dull or dry-looking skin
  • Rough or uneven texture
  • Fine vellus hair or “peach fuzz”
  • Superficial buildup of dead skin cells
  • The appearance of very fine lines
  • How smoothly makeup applies

The result is skin that feels noticeably softer and looks smoother and more refreshed.

How does dermaplaning work?

During dermaplaning, your provider holds a specialized blade at a precise angle and gently passes it across the surface of the skin. This controlled exfoliation removes accumulated dead skin cells and fine facial hair without the use of chemicals or energy-based devices.

Despite a common misconception, dermaplaning does not cause facial hair to grow back thicker or darker. Removing vellus hair at the surface does not change the structure of the hair follicle or how the hair grows.

Who is a good candidate for dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning can be appropriate for many skin types and is particularly popular among patients with dry, dull, rough, or uneven-looking skin. It may not be recommended directly over active, inflamed acne or certain irritated skin conditions.

Our team will evaluate your skin before treatment to make sure dermaplaning is appropriate for you.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning provides both exfoliation and peach-fuzz removal in a single treatment. Benefits can include:

  • Smoother, softer-feeling skin
  • A brighter, refreshed appearance
  • Gentle physical exfoliation
  • Removal of fine facial hair
  • Smoother makeup application
  • Little to no downtime

Because there is no lengthy recovery period, dermaplaning can also be a convenient treatment before an event or whenever your complexion needs a refresh.

Can dermaplaning be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Dermaplaning can be incorporated into a broader facial rejuvenation or skincare plan when appropriate.

Depending on your skin and goals, our team may recommend pairing or coordinating dermaplaning with treatments such as a customized facial, DiamondGlow®, or a chemical peel.

The right combination depends on your skin sensitivity, the treatments being performed, and what you’re trying to improve. More isn’t always better, so our team will determine which treatments should be combined and how they should be timed.

What can I expect during treatment?

Your provider will begin by cleansing and preparing your skin. A sterile blade is then gently passed across the treatment area using controlled strokes to remove dead surface cells and vellus hair.

A typical dermaplaning session takes approximately 30 minutes and is generally well tolerated. You may feel the blade moving across your skin, but dermaplaning should not be painful.

When will I see results?

One of the advantages of dermaplaning is that the smoothing effect is noticeable quickly. After treatment, skin typically feels softer and looks brighter and more even.

Because skin cells continue to renew and vellus hair naturally grows back, the results are temporary. Many patients choose to repeat dermaplaning periodically as part of their ongoing skincare routine. Our team can recommend an appropriate treatment schedule based on your skin and goals.

Your skin may be temporarily more sensitive following exfoliation, so daily sun protection is especially important after treatment.
