If you’ve tried topical treatments, prescription medications, or other approaches for acne and still struggle with persistent breakouts, AviClear® offers a different way to target acne at its source.

AviClear is an FDA-cleared laser treatment for mild, moderate, and severe inflammatory acne. Using a precise 1726 nm wavelength, it targets the sebaceous glands responsible for producing oil — one of the key contributors to acne. Treatment typically consists of three 30-minute sessions, with no prescription medication required as part of the AviClear treatment itself.

AviClear can be used across all skin types and tones.

How does AviClear® work?

Acne develops when excess sebum, dead skin cells, bacteria, and inflammation contribute to clogged pores and breakouts.

AviClear takes a different approach from many conventional acne treatments by targeting the sebaceous glands themselves. The 1726 nm laser wavelength selectively targets these oil-producing glands and reduces sebum production. Over time, this can lead to fewer and less severe breakouts.

Because the treatment addresses one of the underlying contributors to acne rather than simply treating individual blemishes, improvements can continue developing after your treatment series is complete.

What is an AviClear® treatment like?

A standard AviClear treatment plan consists of three sessions, generally spaced several weeks apart.

Each session takes approximately 30 minutes. During treatment, the AviClear handpiece delivers laser energy across the targeted areas while the device’s AviCool™ sapphire cooling system helps maintain skin temperature and improve comfort.

You may feel warmth or a snapping sensation as the laser is delivered. Individual experiences vary, but treatment does not typically require extensive downtime.

Dr. Kaga and the TKI team will provide specific instructions for caring for your skin before and after each session.

What types of acne can AviClear® treat?

AviClear is FDA-cleared for the treatment of mild, moderate, and severe inflammatory acne.

It may be considered for patients dealing with:

  • Persistent inflammatory acne
  • Moderate to severe breakouts
  • Adult acne
  • Acne that hasn’t responded adequately to previous treatment
  • Patients looking for a non-drug treatment option
  • Patients who want to reduce their reliance on ongoing acne medications

If you’re dealing with deeper or more severe acne, Dr. Kaga can evaluate whether AviClear is appropriate or whether another acne treatment approach should be considered.

When will I see AviClear® results?

AviClear isn’t designed as an overnight acne treatment. Improvements develop gradually following the treatment series. Some patients may experience temporary changes or fluctuations in their acne as treatment progresses. Breakouts can then improve over the following weeks and months as the effects on sebaceous gland activity develop. Clinical study data reported by the manufacturer showed continued improvement after completion of the treatment series, including at longer-term follow-up. Your response will depend on factors such as the type and severity of your acne, and individual results can vary.

How does AviClear® compare to traditional acne treatments?

There are many effective ways to treat acne, and no single treatment is right for everyone.

AviClear vs. topical acne treatments

Topical treatments such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and prescription medications can be highly effective, particularly for mild to moderate acne.

However, they generally require consistent ongoing use. AviClear offers an alternative approach by using laser energy to target sebaceous glands rather than relying on a daily topical treatment.

AviClear vs. oral antibiotics

Oral antibiotics may be prescribed for certain cases of inflammatory acne, typically for a limited period and often alongside topical therapy.

AviClear doesn’t involve antibiotics and may be an option for appropriate patients interested in a device-based treatment.

AviClear vs. isotretinoin (Accutane)

Isotretinoin can be highly effective for severe or treatment-resistant acne, but it is a systemic prescription medication that requires appropriate medical monitoring and has important potential side effects and pregnancy-related precautions.

AviClear is a non-systemic laser treatment and does not carry the same medication-related considerations.

Is AviClear® right for me?

AviClear may be worth considering if you have persistent acne and want an alternative to, or a different approach from, ongoing topical or oral medications. It can also be considered for adults who continue to experience breakouts well beyond their teenage years.

During your consultation, Dr. Kaga will evaluate your skin, acne severity, treatment history, and current skincare regimen to determine whether AviClear or another acne treatment available at TKI is the better choice.

How many AviClear® treatments will I need?

The standard AviClear treatment protocol consists of three approximately 30-minute sessions, typically scheduled several weeks apart. Acne improvement can continue after the third treatment as sebaceous gland activity changes over time. Whether additional acne management or maintenance is appropriate depends on your individual response and other factors contributing to your breakouts.
