Age spots, also known as sun spots or liver spots, are flat areas of pigmentation that commonly develop after years of sun exposure. They often appear on areas that receive the most UV exposure, including the face, chest, shoulders, arms, and hands. While harmless in many cases, these spots can make the skin look uneven or more sun-damaged than you would like.
At The Kaga Institute, Dr. Mira Kaga and her team offer several non-surgical treatments for age spots, sun damage, and uneven pigmentation. Rather than taking a one-treatment-fits-all approach, we evaluate your skin and select the technology best suited to the type and depth of pigmentation you have.

What causes age spots?
Age spots develop when melanin becomes concentrated in certain areas of the skin. Cumulative UV exposure is one of the primary contributors, which is why they become increasingly common with age and frequently develop on sun-exposed areas.
Sun protection can help prevent new pigmentation and existing spots from becoming darker, but established age spots may require professional treatment to noticeably reduce their appearance.
How can The Kaga Institute treat age spots?
Depending on your skin type, pigmentation, treatment area, and goals, your treatment plan may include:
excel® V+
excel® V+ incorporates 532 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths, allowing treatments to be customized for a variety of vascular and pigmentation concerns. For appropriate types of sun spots and pigmentation, laser energy targets excess pigment while minimizing disruption to surrounding skin. Treated spots may initially darken before gradually fading or flaking away as the skin renews itself.
LimeLight IPL Photofacial
LimeLight IPL uses intense pulsed light to address visible pigmentation and sun damage across larger areas of the skin. Rather than treating one isolated spot at a time, IPL can be particularly useful when brown spots, freckles, redness, and uneven tone are spread across areas such as the face, neck, chest, or hands. The targeted pigment absorbs the light energy and gradually becomes less visible as the skin clears.
Laser Genesis
Laser Genesis is a non-invasive laser treatment designed to improve overall skin quality by gently heating the dermis and stimulating collagen remodeling. It may be incorporated into a treatment plan when pigmentation occurs alongside concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, redness, or uneven skin tone and texture.
Which age spot treatment is right for me?
The best treatment depends on what is causing the pigmentation, how deep it is, your skin type, and where the spots are located. A treatment that works well for widespread sun damage may not be the best choice for an isolated pigmented lesion. During your consultation, Dr. Kaga’s team will evaluate your skin and determine whether laser treatment, IPL, or a combination approach is appropriate for you.
Will age spots fade on their own?
Established age spots generally don’t disappear simply because you begin using better sun protection. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen can help prevent additional UV damage and keep existing pigmentation from becoming more pronounced, but professional treatment may be needed to significantly improve spots that are already present.
It’s also important to have any new, changing, irregular, or concerning pigmented lesion medically evaluated rather than assuming it is an age spot.
