Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can cause more than occasional jaw discomfort. Symptoms may include jaw pain or tightness, clicking or popping, headaches, facial soreness, and difficulty or discomfort when chewing or opening the mouth. For some people, chronic clenching or teeth grinding can also overwork the jaw muscles and contribute to ongoing pain.
At The Kaga Institute, we provide non-surgical treatment options for patients whose TMJ symptoms may be related to excessive jaw-muscle activity. Our goal is to reduce tension, improve comfort, and create a treatment plan based on what’s contributing to your symptoms.

How can The Kaga Institute help me treat TMJ?
At our practice, we provide:
Neuromodulators
Neuromodulators, including BOTOX®, can be strategically injected into overactive jaw muscles such as the masseters. Treatment temporarily reduces excessive muscle activity, helping the muscles relax.
For patients whose TMJ symptoms are associated with clenching or grinding, this may help reduce jaw tension, soreness, and related headaches. We customize treatment based on your symptoms, facial anatomy, and the muscles contributing to your discomfort.
For patients with enlarged masseter muscles, treatment may also gradually soften a wider or more square-looking jawline, providing both functional and aesthetic benefits.
What causes TMJ disorders?
TMJ disorders can have several causes, including teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), jaw injuries, arthritis, structural or bite-related issues, and excessive tension in the muscles surrounding the jaw.
Because jaw pain can have different underlying causes, identifying what’s contributing to your symptoms is important. Neuromodulators primarily address the muscular component of TMJ symptoms and may not be appropriate when the problem originates within the joint itself.
Is BOTOX® right for my TMJ symptoms?
BOTOX® for TMJ may be appropriate when overactive jaw muscles, chronic clenching, or grinding contribute to your symptoms. It is not a universal treatment for every type of TMJ disorder.
Our team will evaluate your symptoms and determine whether neuromodulator treatment makes sense for you. If your symptoms suggest a structural, dental, or joint-related problem, we may recommend evaluation by an appropriate dental or medical specialist.
Are there lifestyle changes that can help with TMJ?
Certain habits can help reduce unnecessary strain on the jaw. Avoiding excessive gum chewing, being mindful of daytime clenching, managing stress, and temporarily choosing softer foods during a flare-up may help reduce discomfort.
Depending on the cause of your symptoms, other approaches such as dental appliances, physical therapy, or additional medical or dental care may also be appropriate.
